I don't know why everyone's getting offended about Coldplay 'attacking' U2's position, though I guess it can be expected at a u2 fansite. But c'mon! Forget the ridiculous-competitive-top-ten spirit of comparing one band to another and look at what they all have to bring to the table. There is always room for beautiful music in the world.
Viva la Vida is a masterpiece, topping Rush of Blood to the Head the same way I think Achtung topped Joshua Tree. Revolutionary and evolutionary, complicated and simple, personal and universal, its a brilliant album. No two songs sound alike and each seems to bring something to the other (songs that rely on each other to become something bigger as a whole is rare in today's easily abandoned album format). Viva la Vida is more than collection of songs, its a celebration of life and all the colors, meloncholy blues to bright lush reds (Yellow anyone?).
Had coldplay churned out another x/y, I would think they deserved to fall under U2's shadows but they are now in a completely different terrain. U2 has never and would never be able to create an album like this, just the same as Coldplay could never and would never create a AB, JT or Unforgettable Fire.
Attending a Coldplay concert on Saturday and a U2 concert on Sunday is what I would call a fantastic weekend. If they were on the same day and I could only attend one, then maybe I would be inclined to compare (in which case U2's new album would have to be really, REALLY good) but since that's not likely to happen, why not put aside the nasty glances and defensive postures? This is a fantastic album and I think Chris and the boys deserve it, don't they?
you seem to be prematurely shooting U2 down with that review but I tend to agree with most of what you are saying. The album just isn't pullig the right strings for me though. Time will tell all

I didn't intend to but I can see how you read it that way. I meant that it wasn't likely both concerts would be held on the same day; "If they were on the same day and I could only attend one, then maybe I would be inclined to compare but since that's not likely to happen, why not put aside the nasty glances and defensive postures?"
It makes more sense without the bracket. Oddly enough, I make even less sense in person. I would never shoot U2 down before an album...
...maybe after, but never before
Ps - Viva la Vida, Lovers in Japan, Lost!, Life in Technicolor, Yes and Strawberry Swing are fantastic. If you don't like Strawberry Swing, I suggest listening to it outside on a beautiful day. That's how it clicked with me
Wow, what a surprise this album is. Easily better than X&Y, where the songs where to similar to each other. After a while they began to bore me (except Fix You, X&Y and Swallowed In The Sea). This album is way better, much more surprizing Strawberry Swing, Cemeteries Of London, Lovers In Japan, and Violet Hill are my favourites . Time will tell if it's comparable to Parachutes and A Rush Of Blood To The Head.
anybody else think the play order of the album is a little crap. I had it on shuffle today and played Vida La Vida, Violet Hill then Lovers In Japan and the album just started off way way better. In its current state it just seems to take quite a while to get going

The best songs start with Lost and so on. So yes, I agree with you in this matter.
The album has grown on me and it already past Parachutes IMO, but it will take a long time before I like it more than X&Y and it will never pass AROBTTH...
